PM Modi, LoP Rahul Gandhi pay tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru on 61st death anniversary

New Delhi, May 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge along with other leaders paid tribute to India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 61st death anniversary on Tuesday.

Taking to his official ‘X’ handle, PM Modi wrote, "Tributes to our former PM, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary."

Rahul Gandhi remembered Nehru's "visionary leadership" and said he laid a strong foundation for independent India with his visionary leadership.

"Respectful tribute to the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ji on his death anniversary. With the dream of a strong and inclusive India, Nehruji laid a strong foundation for independent India with his visionary leadership. His contribution in the establishment of social justice, modernity, education, constitution and democracy is invaluable. The legacy of Jawahar of India and his ideals will always guide us," wrote Rahul Gandhi in a post on ‘X’. 

Earlier today, Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, offered floral tributes to Jawaharlal Nehru at his memorial, Shanti Van, in Delhi.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also paid his respects to Nehru, describing him as the "architect of modern India." He emphasized that the India of the 21st century could not have been imagined without Nehru's contributions.

"Humble tributes on the death anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ji, the creator of modern India, the fearless guardian of democracy, the one who took India from zero to the peak, the one who made India develop in scientific, economic, industrial and various fields, the one who constantly gave the message of 'unity in diversity' to the country, our source of inspiration. 21st century India cannot be imagined without the contribution of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru," Kharge said in a post on X. 

Notably, Jawaharlal Nehru became the India’s first Prime Minister after the independence in 1947. He served as Prime Minister for over 16 years before he passed away from a heart attack on May 27, 1964. 

Nehru is also known as the founder of India's Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). He was very fond of children, which is why people called him 'Chacha Nehru.' 

His birthday, November 14, is celebrated as Children's Day every year in India.
