PM Modi Inaugurates New Central Secretariat Building
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Kartavya Bhavan, the first of ten new Common Central Secretariat buildings planned under the ambitious Central Vista redevelopment project. This marks a significant step in the government's plan to modernize its administrative infrastructure and bring key ministries under one roof to improve efficiency.
A New Hub for Key Ministries
The newly opened Kartavya Bhavan will serve as the new home for several crucial ministries, including Home Affairs, External Affairs, and Rural Development, among others. These departments will relocate from older buildings like Shastri Bhawan and Krishi Bhawan, which the government has described as "structurally outdated and inefficient." The move is designed to streamline inter-departmental coordination and create a more integrated administrative ecosystem.
The Broader Central Vista Plan
The inauguration of Kartavya Bhavan is a major milestone in the larger Central Vista project, which aims to overhaul the nation's seat of power. The overall plan includes the construction of ten such secretariat buildings, a new Parliament building and Vice President's Enclave (which are already complete), and a redeveloped Kartavya Path.
While the new buildings are being constructed, offices from the old bhawans will be temporarily shifted to other locations in the capital. The next phase of the project includes the completion of two more secretariat buildings by next month and the construction of a new Executive Enclave, which will house the Prime Minister's Office. This comprehensive redevelopment is set to fundamentally change the landscape of India's central administrative complex.
