Rayagada, May 27: In a heartbreaking example of financial hardship overshadowing academic success, Debendra Kusulia, who emerged as the topper in the Plus-II Arts stream in Muniguda block of Rayagada district, is now working in a hotel in Kerala to support his higher education.
Debendra, a resident of Dhepagudi village under Telengapadar panchayat in Muniguda block, had been a bright student since childhood. After securing 74 per cent marks in matriculation from Telengapadar High School, he enrolled in the Arts stream at Muniguda College.
Despite severe financial difficulties, he travelled nearly 20 km daily on a bicycle to attend college. His hard work and determination paid off when he secured 86 per cent marks in the Plus-II Arts examination, becoming the topper of the entire Muniguda block.
However, instead of celebrating his academic achievement, Debendra has now migrated to Kerala and is currently working at a restaurant in Ernakulam to arrange funds for his higher studies.
His parents, who survive on daily wage labour, admitted that they were unable to bear the expenses of his higher education, forcing him to seek work outside the state. While they expressed happiness over their son’s success, they also voiced concern about his future studies.
College authorities said Debendra is a talented and hardworking student who has excelled despite adverse circumstances. They expressed hope that with financial assistance, he would achieve greater success in the future and continue his education.
