Pipili by-poll: Congress candidate Ajit Mangaraj dies of Covid-19

Bhubaneswar, April 14: Congress candidate for Pipili by-election, Ajit Mangaraj died today at a Bhubaneswar based private hospital. Mangaraj was undergoing treatment after he was tested positive for Covid-19. The bypoll for the assembly segment is likely to be cancelled after the death of the Congress candidate. Polling for the constituency was supposed to be conducted on April 17. The bypoll was necessitated by the death of sitting BJD MLA Pradeep Kumar Maharathy on October 4 in 2020. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday had spokenn to the brother of Mangaraj over telephone and enquired about the health condition of the Congress leader. Hospital authorities said that the 52-year-old politician was admitted to the hospital on April 7 with diagnosis of Severe Covid-19 pneumonia. “The patient was under treatment of a multidisciplinary team of doctors from specialities including critical care, cardiology and pulmonary medicine in Covid ICU where all necessary life saving support including non invasive ventilation was extended save the life of the patient. However after bravely battling the severe Covid infection for past seven days he succumbed to the disease today,” said an official of the hospital.
