Single mother builds secure home overcoming severe financial hardship
Runu Pradhan recently completed her new house in just three months and ten days, securing ₹25,000 in wage-loss compensation from Odisha’s PMAY-U BANDHU scheme. As a widowed tailor residing in Ward No. 9 of Phulbani Municipality, she balanced raising two daughters with supervising her home's construction. This government support arrived exactly when her daily income dropped due to time spent managing the building site.
Targeted Relief for Vulnerable Families
Rural and semi-urban housing programs in Odisha have historically transformed livelihoods by offering marginalized families permanent shelters against extreme weather. Runu received her work order on 12 June 2025 under PMAY-U 2.0. She finished the structure quickly, qualifying for an early completion incentive from the state. However, she lost significant tailoring wages during those crucial construction months. Government officials recognized this exact vulnerability. They delivered targeted financial relief to prevent single breadwinners from falling into debt while building a permanent residence. This compensation acknowledges that poor families often sacrifice their immediate livelihood to secure long-term shelter.

State-Level Local Self-Government Day 2026 provided an important platform for this success story. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi spoke directly with Runu about her experience. He asked about her participation in the housing program, her benefits from the Subhadra Yojana, and her family's overall well-being.
