Over 760 Turtles Seized in Odisha’s Malkangiri

Bhubaneswar, April 23: In a Major Wildlife Smuggling Crackdown, the Forest Department in Malkangiri district successfully intercepted 761 turtles at the Motu checkpost in Kalimela, authorities confirmed on Thursday.

The seizure followed a tip-off, leading forest officials to stop a suspicious SUV that had crossed into Odisha from Andhra Pradesh. Upon searching the vehicle, they discovered a large stash of turtles, which collectively weighed around 2,305 kg. The estimated market value of the seized turtles stands at approximately ₹7 lakh.

The vehicle and its driver have been detained, with initial investigations revealing that the turtles were likely being transported for a local broker named Shaktipad Gain, a resident of MPV-83 village in the Motu police station area. However, Gain is currently on the run.

Motu Forester Murulidhar Anugulia suggested that the operation might be linked to a broader inter-state smuggling ring. "We are expanding the investigation to identify other individuals involved in this illegal operation," he stated.

The seizure has raised concerns in the Kalimela area, prompting the authorities to step up surveillance and enforcement efforts. The Forest Department has vowed to intensify its fight against illegal wildlife trade, warning that stronger actions will be taken against those caught violating wildlife protection laws.Bottom of Form
