Over 20 lakh Olive Ridley hatchlings crawl into sea at Gahirmatha coast

Rajnagar, May 8: Around 20 lakh and eight thousand Olive Ridley hatchlings have entered into the sea at Nasi-II beach under Gahirmatha Sanctuary so far. As per the Gahiramatha Sanctuary authorities, as many as 3,49,600 female turtles were under breeding during March 10-24. They have hatched as many as 20 lakh and 8000 hatchlings so far. The new born turtles were seen crawling into the sea on Friday. At the same time, lakhs of eggs are yet to be hatched within a week. They will crawl into the sea conveniently in dark nights. That’s why all the lights have been put off in the Abdul Kalam Island. Proper watch and ward is being carried by the sanctuary authorities, said a forest official.
