Koraput, Nov 22: In a major crackdown on illegal cannabis cultivation, around 38 acres of ganja (cannabis) plant have been destroyed at Macchakund, Lamtaput, and Jalaput localities in the district.
The joint operation, carried out by the Macchakund Police, Lamtaput, and Koraput Excise Departments, under the guidance of the local magistrate.
According to police sources, approximately 53,000 ganja plants were destroyed, with an estimated value over Rs. 3 crores.
Acting on a tip-off about the illegal platation, the operation Green Clean was launched. The land, located near the Palam village of Balel Panchayat, farmers have long been engaged in illicit cultivation of cannabis due to a lack of awareness.
The operation marks a significant step in tackling cannabis farming, especially in this region, which had previously been affected by Maoist influence. The area, known for its dense forests and challenging landscape, has witnessed illegal activities for years, with farmers continuing to grow cannabis due to lack of awareness about the harmful effects of such cultivation.
Meanwhile, police started investigation into the matter.
