Khordha, Sept 27: A tragic road accident involving three buses occurred near the Banpur overbridge on National Highway 16 in Khordha district, claiming the life of one person and leaving five others seriously injured.
The incident took place when a bus traveling from Similiguda to Bhubaneswar came to a sudden halt to avoid hitting cattle lying on the road. A motorcycle following the bus was rear-ended by another bus, which in turn was struck from behind by a third bus en route from Visakhapatnam to Kolkata.
The impact proved fatal for Shubham Jyoti Praharaj, a resident of Nimikshetra village under Balugaon police limits, who was riding pillion on the motorcycle. He died on the spot, while the bike rider sustained critical injuries and was shifted to Bhubaneswar for treatment.
Among the five injured are two passengers, a co-driver, and a helper, who are currently undergoing treatment at the Balugaon Community Health Centre.
Following the accident, drivers of all three buses reportedly fled the scene. Banpur police reached the spot and have launched an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, local residents staged a road blockade, demanding compensation for the deceased’s family, leading to temporary disruption of traffic on the busy highway. Police are working to restore normalcy and trace the absconding drivers.
Further details are awaited.
