Odisha: Two warders suspended after prison break at Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttack

Cuttack, Oct 3: After two dreaded inter-State criminals escaped from Choudwar Circle Jail in Odisha’s Cuttack late last night, two warders have been suspended for dereliction of duty.

According to reports, the two prisoners, who were lodged in separate cells, managed to escape by cutting through the grill and using a bamboo stick to climb the wall. They allegedly made a rope out of cloth to scale the wall and flee the premises.

The prisoners were being held in connection with a loot case in Panikoili, where they had allegedly opened fire on a jewellery store employee, killing him on the spot.

Following reports of their escape, Director General of Prisons Susanta Kumar Nath visited Choudwar Jail and ordered a thorough inquiry. The DIG (Cuttack Range) has been tasked with conducting a detailed investigation and submitting a report. In the meantime, disciplinary action has been taken against warders Bhagat Ram and Siddhant Sahu.

Nath stated that an investigation is currently underway and that stringent action will be taken against any jail employees found involved in the prisoners’ escape. He added that action has already been taken against the chief warder and a warder.

He also mentioned that the DIG of the Cuttack Range has been instructed to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a detailed report.
