Odisha: Two Notorious criminals escape from Choudwar circle jail

Cuttack, October 3: Two dreaded inter-State criminals escaped from Choudwar Circle Jail late last night.

The two escapees identified as Raja Sahani and Madhukanta Rana - residents of Bihar – were lodged at the Choudwar Circle jail following their arrest in connection with a jewellery shop loot case at Panikoili of Jajpur district on January 4 this year. Two men were shot dead during the attempted robbery.

Immediately after learning about the breakout, jail staff conducted a headcount of all inmates and informed senior officials. A detailed investigation into the incident is underway.

Meanwhile, Choudwar police also launched a manhunt to nab the notorious criminal duo.

“The jail authorities informed us about the breakout this morning. We have launched a manhunt to nab the escapees,” said Choudwar police station IIC Dipitikanta Khandayatray.

For the context, on January 4, a gang of criminals, posing as customers, entered a jewellery shop in Panikoili. The gang brandished revolvers to intimidate staff and customers, attempting to loot the store. During the chaos, they fatally shot two people, including a customer who tried to intervene.

While two gang members, Subham Sahani (33) of Begusarai and Mandhukanta Singh (24) of Ramapur village in Saran district of Bohar, were caught on the same day, others managed to escape.
