Gajapati, Aug 7: In a tragic incident, a 30-year-old woman and her seven-year-old son died after they were allegedly bitten by common kraits while sleeping at their home in Kadambatal village under Jalang Panchayat in Rayagada block of Gajapati district.
The deceased have been identified as Lalita Badarait (30) and her son Amit. Lalita’s husband, Ajay Kumar Badarait, and their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter reportedly escaped unharmed.
According to reports, the family was asleep on Thursday night when two suspected common kraits entered the house and allegedly bit Lalita and Amit. The mother and son reportedly woke up in severe pain and raised an alarm, following which Ajay noticed the snakes inside the house.
Family members immediately rushed the victims to the Rayagada Community Health Centre. As their condition deteriorated, they were referred to the District Headquarters Hospital in Paralakhemundi.
Despite medical treatment, both Lalita and Amit reportedly succumbed to the snakebite while undergoing treatment.
The tragic incident has left Kadambatal village in shock and mourning.
Snakebite incidents often increase during the monsoon as snakes seek shelter in homes and other dry places.
