Berhampur, July 14: In a shocking incident, a young woman was left battling for life with 40 per cent burn injuries after she was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws over dowry demands in Khallikote area of Odisha’s Ganjam district today.
The victim has been identified as Arati and the incident has been reported from Kahneipura village under Khallikote police limits. She was initially admitted to Khallikote Hospital in a half-burnt condition and later shifted to the MKCG Hospital in Berhampur as her health condition deteriorated.
According to reports, Arati was married to one Akash Parida two years ago. Since then, her in-laws had allegedly been subjecting her physical and mental harassment over dowry demands.
Last night, a heated argument reportedly took place between Arati and her mother-in-law. The situation escalated tragically this morning when her mother-in-law and brother-in-law, identified as Prakash, allegedly poured petrol on her and set her on fire.
Upon getting the information, police reached the hospital and launched an investigation into the matter.
