Cuttack, Oct 21: Odisha Police on Wednesday observed the 67th State-Level Police Commemoration Day at the Reserve Police Ground in Buxi Bazaar, Cuttack, paying tribute to police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
Odisha Director General of Police (DGP)-in-charge Vinaytosh Mishra, along with senior police officers, laid wreaths at the Martyrs’ Memorial to honour the brave personnel who lost their lives while protecting the country and its people.
Police officers from across the state attended the programme, which highlighted the courage, dedication and sacrifice of personnel committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety.
Police Commemoration Day is observed across India every year on October 21 in memory of 10 police personnel who were killed by Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh on October 21, 1959, while guarding the country's borders.
This year, 154 police personnel lost their lives in the line of duty while safeguarding the public, underscoring the risks and challenges faced by security forces.
Addressing the gathering, Mishra said Odisha Police would take firm action against criminal activities and remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of citizens.
He also spoke about the changing security scenario over the past four decades, noting that terrorism had emerged as a major challenge in Punjab, Kashmir and several other states. Although terrorist activities have declined, crime continues to be a significant concern, he said.
The annual observance serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by police personnel and reinforces the commitment of the force to protecting lives and maintaining peace and security.
