Dhenkanal, July 30: A 17-year-old girl, who had eloped and married her lover just four days earlier, was found hanging in a forest in Kankadahada locality of Odisha’s Dhenkanal district last evening.

The deceased minor had reportedly married 23-year-old Biren Nayak of Hatiluchani village under Parjang police limits on July 25.

According to sources, the incident has been reported from Kandhara village under Kankadahada police limits in the district. Local villagers discovered the body and informed the girl's family, who then alerted the police.

After getting the information, Kankadahada police along with the fire service personnel arrived at the spot and recovered the body. Later, it was sent to Kamakhyanagar Community Health Centre (CHC) for post-mortem.

The couple reportedly met about four months ago at Dhenkanal bus stand where Nayak was working as a packaged water seller. They stayed in touch over the phone and eventually decided to elope and get married at a local temple.

On Tuesday afternoon, the couple visited the girl’s parental home. However, a quarrel reportedly broke out later that day over a mobile phone. Shortly after, the girl was found hanging from a tree in a nearby cashew forest.

The cops have detained Nayak and launched a probe into the matter to ascertain the circumstances that led to the girl’s death, said the police.
