Berhampur, Aug 9: In a gruesome incident, a man was brutally murdered by his landlord following a rent dispute in the Aska Road area of Odisha’s Berhampur city last night.

The deceased has been identified as Shankar Majhi, a resident of Sriram Nagar locality in the city.

As per reports, Shankar had been staying on rent in a house at Haridakhandi but had allegedly not been paying the rent and was also unwilling to vacate the premises. This led to frequent arguments between him and the house owner.

Last night, taking advantage of the fact that no one else was present in the house, the landlord allegedly visited Shankar’s room. A heated altercation reportedly broke out between the two, during which the landlord attacked Shankar with a sharp weapon leading to his death on the spot.

After the assault, he is believed to have poured water over Shankar and left him lying unconscious. He then locked the house from outside and fled the scene.

Suspecting some foul play, neighbors alerted the police. Upon getting the information, police arrived at the scene and rushed Shankar to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Later, the body was sent for post-mortem.

A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to ascertain. Efforts are also on to nab the accused house owner who is currently absconding, said the police.
