Bhubaneswar, Nov 11: Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC) CEO Manoj Kumar Pattnaik has fallen prey to cyber fraud and the fraudsters have allegedly hacked his WhatsApp number and later demanded huge amount of money from people in his contact list.

The incident came to fore after the victims, who had transferred money to the hackers filed a complaint at Saheed Nagar police station.

According to reports, an unknown cyber-fraudster allegedly hacked Pattnaik’s WhatsApp number, impersonated him and demanded money from the contact list of the victim by sending distress messages.

Assuming the messages as genuine, some of the close contacts of the OCAC CEO had transferred money to the bank and UPI accounts shared by the fraudster. Sources said five persons together sent around Rs 7L to the accounts of the cyber-criminal.

Pattnaik said he had received a call from an unknown number on his WhatsApp on Tuesday afternoon. As the caller did not say anything, he hung up the phone after around 30 seconds.

After some time, he received a call from one of his friends who inquired about his health and informed him about the distress message which he had received from Pattnaik’s Whatsapp number seeking urgent financial help for treatment.

Pattnaik said he was still unable to reinstall his WhatsApp on the same number as the hackers might have tampered with his profile’s authentication system.

Meanwhile, the Crime Branch has taken up the investigations of the case and has registered a case (25/2021).
