Bhubaneswar, Mar 22: Odisha government so far has identified as 8,338 beggars in the state, informed Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Minister, Ashok Chandra Panda in the state Assembly.
As per official statistics, Puri district has the highest number of 1,080 beggars followed by Khordha and Cuttack which have 1,072 and 1,060beggars respectively.
Similarly, there are only five beggars in Nuapada district, the lowest in the state.
The minister said that the government has introduced a scheme called ‘Sahaya’ to rehabilitate and to provide self-employment to the beggars in the state.
As per the official data, the state has 5,051 male and 3,257 female beggars.
