Bhubaneswar, August 15: The Odisha government on Saturday ordered an investigation into allegations that a private power generation company discharged excess water into the Baitarani River without informing authorities, worsening the flood situation in parts of Keonjhar district.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari announced the probe after reviewing the flood situation in northern Odisha.

According to Pujari, the alleged unauthorised discharge of excess water by the company aggravated flooding in Keonjhar, raising concerns over the lack of prior communication with the district administration.

“The flood situation in Keonjhar district worsened after a private power generation company discharged excess water into the Baitarani without informing the authorities or the district administration,” Pujari told reporters.

The state government is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the discharge and determine whether established procedures and regulations were followed.
