Odisha Govt clarifies LPG norms: Migrant workers, students can buy 5-kg cylinders with ID

Bhubaneswar, April 6: The Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department has issued a clarification on LPG sales, easing concerns triggered by recent restrictions.

As per the latest clarification, migrant workers and students can purchase 5-kg LPG cylinders by showing valid identity proof. Consumers who have completed e-KYC will also be eligible to buy cylinders upon verification. The department further stated that while 5-litre gas cylinders have been completely banned, 5-kg cylinders sold by oil marketing companies will remain available to eligible buyers.

The clarification comes amid confusion following a statement by the state minister on Sunday regarding restrictions on LPG sales in the open market. The move was linked to supply concerns arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which had led to a sudden spike in LPG prices and availability issues.

Earlier, the minister had announced curbs on open market LPG sales, mandatory e-KYC for consumers, and restrictions on refilling certain categories of cylinders. However, the latest clarification makes it clear that migrant workers and students will not be affected, provided they produce valid ID proof.

The department also reiterated that there is no shortage of LPG or petrol in the state and assured that strict measures are in place to prevent black marketing.
