Odisha GARIMA Initiative Transforms Core Sanitation Workers Lives With Unprecedented Safety Measures

Odisha replaces manual cleaning with mechanized safety and respect

Odisha will host the 2nd National GARIMA Conclave this August to celebrate and expand its successful sanitation welfare scheme. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi recently reaffirmed his commitment to this protective ecosystem. Over 9,300 core sanitation workers across the state now benefit from mechanized cleaning systems. Hazardous manual practices are quickly fading into history. Historically, India has struggled to eradicate manual scavenging, making Odisha's systematic approach a rare model of effective reform. This initiative ensures workers earn an honest livelihood without risking their health.

Modern technology now replaces dangerous manual labor in sewers and septic tanks. Workers receive specialized mechanized equipment and full personal protective gear. Helmets, heavy-duty boots, and protective masks keep them safe from occupational hazards. Government support goes far beyond basic physical safety. Registered workers get regular health check-ups, life insurance, and hazard allowances. Urban local bodies have even built dedicated rest halls with clean facilities to ensure proper working conditions. Housing assistance further elevates their living standards.

Real Stories of Changing Lives

Raju Naik from Berhampur Municipal Corporation shows how much this program matters. He used to clean sewers by hand, facing daily health risks. He now operates advanced desludging machines as a trained professional. Better income, subsidized food schemes, and housing support have completely changed his family's outlook. Thousands of workers share similar stories of finding newfound respect and social security. They finally feel recognised as skilled professionals. Policymakers, development partners, and technology experts will gather in Bhubaneswar on August 22 and 23. They will discuss ways to replicate these inclusive sanitation policies across India. Sharing successful strategies helps ensure no worker risks their life in a manhole ever again. True progress happens when labor dignity becomes an everyday reality.
