Bhubaneswar, July 15: A high-level meeting on renewable energy was convened today at the Lokseva Bhavan conference hall under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Energy, Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo. The meeting focused on enhancing wind energy capacity in Odisha as part of the state’s broader commitment to renewable energy goals.
India has over four decades of experience in wind energy generation, and Odisha is now accelerating its efforts to harness wind and solar power. With its long coastline and elevated barren hilltops, the state holds significant potential for wind energy development.
Deputy Chief Minister Singh Deo emphasized the importance of integrating wind and solar energy to ensure a stable and reliable power grid.
“A hybrid approach is essential for creating a resilient energy infrastructure and meeting our national climate commitments,” he stated.
The meeting explored the production potential, existing challenges, and actionable strategies to scale up wind energy generation in the state. Enhancing wind power capacity is critical to India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which include achieving 50% of installed electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030, and reaching net-zero emissions by 2070.
As part of the discussions, representatives from the South Africa-based company Eveready presented a proposal to establish wind turbines in select districts of Odisha, highlighting technical feasibility and potential impact.
Key attendees included Principal Secretary (Energy) Vishal Kumar Dev, GRIDCO Managing Director Dr. Satyapriya Rath, FA-cum-Special Secretary Debidutta Tripathy, Additional Secretary Saidutta Biplab Keshari, Eveready South Asia Business Head Arijit Das, and senior officials from the departments of Energy, Irrigation & Water Resources, and Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to explore viable wind energy projects and foster collaborations with technology providers and industry stakeholders to support Odisha’s clean energy transition.
