Sambalpur, Aug 28: In a shocking case of patricide amid Nuakhai festivities, a youth allegedly thrashed his elderly father to death in inebriated condition in Charbhati village under Kuchinda police limits in Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Thursday.
The accused has been identified as 23-year-old Bibardhan Raksa, while the deceased is his 70-year-old father Krupa Sindhu Raksa.
As per reports, a heated exchange of words ensued between the father-son duo when Bibardhan returned home in an inebriated state and demanded money from Krupa, to which he refused.
Later, it took a violent turn when Bibardhan, in a fit of rage, pushed his father to the ground and repeatedly struck him on the head and body with a wooden log. The elderly man sustained grave injuries in the attack and died on the spot.
The victim's daughter, Nirmita, witnessed the attack and quickly alerted neighbors and the Kuchinda police.
Upon getting the information, a police team, led by IIC Bamideb Shankhual, arrived at the scene, took custody of the body, and sent it to Kuchinda Sub Divisional Hospital for a post-mortem.
A forensic team from Sambalpur also gathered evidence from the site.
According to the police, the accused initially sat next to his father's body for a while before fleeing the scene upon hearing that the authorities were on their way. After conducting raids at several locations, he was eventually apprehended.
The incident has deeply shocked the residents of Charbhati, with many blaming the increasing issues of alcohol abuse and gambling in the area for the tragedy.
A murder case has been filed at the Kuchinda police station, and the investigation is ongoing.
