Bhubaneswar, July 17: A Crime Branch team led by DSP Iman Kalyan Nayak on Thursday visited Fakir Mohan College in Balasore, launching an in-depth investigation into the tragic death of a student who reportedly took the extreme step of self-immolation, allegedly due to harassment by an assistant professor.

“We have initiated a preliminary investigation and are currently collecting evidence from the college campus,” said DSP Nayak. “We will review CCTV footage and, if necessary, question members of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), the victim’s friends, and other relevant individuals. All angles are being examined.”

The Crime Branch took over the case earlier this week following directives from the Director General of Police, CID-CB, Vinaytosh Mishra, who assigned DSP Nayak to lead the inquiry.

Before the handover, Balasore Police had arrested two key college officials — Samira Kumar Sahoo, Head of the Education Department, and Principal Dillip Ghose. Both have been charged under multiple sections of the BNS, including abetment to suicide, criminal intimidation, sexual harassment, stalking, and outraging the modesty of a woman.
