Bargarh, Aug 26: In yet another incident of human-animal conflict, a couple was reportedly trampled to death by an elephant in Padmapur area of Odisha's Bargarh district last night.

The deceased have been identified as Balaram Rana and his wife Sashi Rana, residents of Dhandupali village under Paikmal police limits.

According to reports, the couple had been cultivating vegetables and was sleeping at their farm to protect the crops. During the night, a wild elephant wandered into their field.

In a desperate attempt to save their produce, the couple tried to drive the animal away. The elephant turned aggressive and fatally attacked them, resulting in their deaths.

Later in the morning, when family members arrived at the field to check on them, they discovered the crops completely destroyed and the couple lying lifeless.

Upon getting the information, police along with forest personnel arrived at the spot and seized the bodies. Subsequently, they were sent for post-mortem.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
