Bhubaneswar, May 16: In a strategic move to empower the third genders the Odisha government in a first, has formed a State Transgender Welfare Board.
The state issued a notification in this regard on Friday.
To safeguarding the social security of over 30,000 transgender persons living in the state, with the provisions of (Protection of Rights of Transgenders) Act, 2019, the department of Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, set up the body to work for the welfare of the community.
The board, headed by Social Security Minister Nityananda Gond, will have 12 members comprising representatives of Trans community and key officials of as many as 6 allied departments.
Worth mentioning, the board will monitor the implementation of schemes adopted for the transgender community, officials said.
The board will also look after education, employment, housing and health schemes for the transgender persons.
