Odisha constable saves passenger from near-certain death at Cuttack Railway Station

Cuttack, June 5: In a dramatic display of bravery and quick thinking, Constable/1 Tulu Behera of the Railway Police rescued a passenger from the brink of death at Cuttack Railway Station early Thursday morning.

The incident occurred at 8:05 a.m. when Md. Mujahir, a 44-year-old resident of Mirjapur in Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal, slipped while attempting to board the moving Train No. 22503 Kanyakumari–Dibrugarh Express, which was en route to Kishanganj. Mujahir lost his footing on the train’s steps and fell dangerously close to the narrow gap between the platform edge and the train’s wheels.

Constable Behera, who was on duty nearby, sprang into action. With exceptional presence of mind and courage, he rushed to the scene and managed to grab Mujahir’s hands, pulling him to safety just moments before tragedy could strike.

His quick intervention drew praise from senior police officials. Director General of Police (DGP) Odisha, Shri Y.B. Khurania, IPS, announced a cash reward of ₹2,500 for Constable Behera in recognition of his heroic act. Additional Director General (ADG) of Coastal Security and Railways, Shri Arun Bothra, also personally spoke to Behera and commended him for his presence of mind and valor.

The incident has highlighted the critical role of alert and dedicated police personnel in ensuring public safety at high-risk transit points like railway stations.
