Bhubaneswar, July 21: The passing of veteran Communist leader and former Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has drawn heartfelt tributes from across the political spectrum in Odisha. Prominent leaders, including Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and former CM Naveen Patnaik, expressed deep sorrow and extended their condolences over the demise of the 101-year-old political icon.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi remembered Achuthanandan as a principled leader who earned respect across party lines for his simplicity, conviction, and dedication to public service. "His contribution to the socio-political transformation of Kerala and his lifelong fight for the rights of the underprivileged will continue to inspire generations," said Majhi.
Echoing similar sentiments, BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik highlighted Achuthanandan’s long and impactful political journey. “He was a doyen of Indian politics who stood firm in his beliefs. His unwavering commitment to people’s welfare and governance with integrity made him an exemplary statesman,” Patnaik said in his message.
VS Achuthanandan, a towering figure in Indian Left politics and a founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), breathed his last in Thiruvananthapuram while undergoing treatment. He had been battling health complications following a cardiac arrest he suffered nearly a month ago. His death marks the end of an era in Indian politics, particularly in the Left movement, where he stood as a symbol of integrity, resilience, and relentless commitment to the cause of the working class.
Achuthanandan, who served as Chief Minister of Kerala from 2006 to 2011, remained a respected voice in Indian politics even after retiring from active public life. His century-long life was marked by remarkable dedication to public service, intellectual depth, and a steadfast belief in the values of the Left movement.
