Bhubaneswar, Dec 9: Odisha BJP on Monday announced Sujeet Kumar as the face from Odisha for the ensuing Rajya Sabha by-poll.
Former Rajya Sabha MP Sujeet Kumar is reportedly going to file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha bypoll today.
The vacancy in the Rajya Sabha came up as Sujeet, who was nominated from the BJD, resigned as member of the Rajya Sabha. Later on, he joined the state BJP following his resignation on September 6.
Prior to Kumar, Mamata Mohanta, a tribal leader from the Mayurbhanj district, resigned from the Rajya Sabha and joined the BJP, citing isolation from the party top leadership. Subsequently, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha from the BJP unopposed.
Once elected, Sujit Kumar will continue as an MP Rajya Sabha, till April 2026.
On November 26, the ECI had announced by-election to six Rajya Sabha seats including one from Odisha.
At present, there are six casual vacancies in the Council of States from four states following the resignation of members from Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Haryana.
While the last date for filing nominations is scheduled on December 10, the election is scheduled to be held on the 20th of this month.
