Bhubaneswar, July 17:   Normal life was partially disrupted across several parts of Odisha on Thursday as the opposition Congress party, in alliance with seven other political outfits, called for a statewide 12-hour bandh. The bandh was organized in protest against the alleged suicide of a college student who set herself ablaze after reportedly being denied justice in a case of sexual harassment.

The tragic incident has triggered widespread public outrage, prompting political parties to stage demonstrations demanding swift action and accountability from the authorities. Protesters alleged that the student, a resident of the state, was a victim of systemic apathy and was pushed to the brink after her complaints were ignored or inadequately addressed.

Starting from 6 AM, supporters of the bandh took to the streets in various districts, including the capital Bhubaneswar and major cities such as Cuttack, Puri, Bhadrak, Balesore, and Jatni. Roads in several areas wore a deserted look as public and private transportation services were severely curtailed due to the demonstrations. Only a limited number of vehicles were seen operating, and commuters faced difficulties in reaching their destinations.

Railway services were also affected at key stations, including Jatni, Bhadrak, and Puri, where activists staged sit-ins and attempted to block train movements. This led to delays and cancellations, further inconveniencing passengers.

Shops, markets, educational institutions, and commercial establishments shut down in response to the call for the bandh. While there were no reports of large-scale violence, sporadic incidents of road blockades and scuffles between protesters and law enforcement were reported in some areas.

Security forces were deployed in sensitive zones to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident. Police and administrative officials closely monitored the situation and urged the public to maintain peace.

The opposition has blamed the state government for failing to create a safe environment for women and girls, accusing it of negligence in handling complaints of sexual misconduct. “The death of the student is not just a personal tragedy; it is a reflection of the complete breakdown of justice for women under this administration,” said Bhakta Charan Das, President, Odisha Congress, during the protest in Bhubaneswar.

The state government, meanwhile, has ordered a Crime Branch inquiry into the student’s death and assured strict action if any lapses are found. However, opposition parties have demanded immediate arrests and a judicial probe, stating that mere assurances are not enough.
