Bhubaneswar, September 20: The Odisha Assembly was adjourned till Monday following disruptions caused by the opposition parties, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Congress. The protests were triggered by the ongoing fertiliser crisis, which has been severely affecting farmers during the kharif season.
Members of the BJD stormed the well of the House, holding placards and chanting slogans against the BJP-led government. They demanded a full-day debate to address the issue, citing the dire situation faced by the farming community. BJD Chief Whip Pramila Mallik argued that a brief discussion would not adequately capture the scale of the crisis, particularly since farmers make up over 60% of the state's population.
The opposition parties accused the government of widespread fertiliser shortages and black marketing. Congress MLA Ashok Das added that the BJD’s protests were strategically aimed at preventing a debate on the no-confidence motion against the government.
In response, BJP MLA Irasis Acharya pointed out that while an adjournment motion on the fertiliser issue had been accepted, the BJD’s protest had effectively blocked any meaningful discussion on the matter.
