Odisha: Alert issued over possible water release from Upper Kolab Reservoir

Koraput, Oct 3: The Superintending Engineer of the Upper Kolab Head Works Division, Kolabnagar, has issued an alert to the District Collectors of Koraput, Nabarangapur, Malkangiri, and Dantewada regarding a potential release of water from the Upper Kolab Reservoir.

As of 7 PM on Thursday, the reservoir’s water level had reached 856.84 metres, with a live storage capacity of 88.25 per cent. With incessant rainfall continuing in the catchment area, the water level is steadily rising and is expected to approach the full reservoir level of 858 metres soon.

In view of the situation, authorities are considering opening the spillway gates at any moment to prevent overflow and ensure the safety of the dam. The district collectors have been directed to take necessary precautions to protect downstream communities from possible flooding in low-lying areas.

“In inviting a kind reference to the subject cited above, it is to inform that the Upper Kolab Reservoir has reached R.L. 856.84 m at 7.00 PM on 2nd October 2025, having a live storage capacity of 88.25%. Due to incessant rainfall in the catchment area, the reservoir level is on a rising trend. As the full reservoir level of 858.00 m may be reached shortly, it is proposed to release water from the reservoir through spillway gates of the Upper Kolab Dam as a precautionary measure,” read the official notification

The warning has placed district administrations on high alert, with officials urged to act swiftly to minimise risks of flooding and ensure public safety.
