Odisha: 19-yr-old woman found dead weeks after love marriage, kin cry dowry death

Dharmasala, July 14: Within a month after her love marriage, a 19-year-old woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Dharmasala block of Odisha’s Jajpur district on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Kiranprabha Barik and the incident has been reported from Galagali Sankha village in Patunia panchayat under Dharmasala police limits. Though the exact reason behind her death is yet to be ascertained, her family has alleged that she was killed over dowry.
As per reports, Kiranprabha, daughter of Harihar Barik from Achyutapur village, had married Srikant Jena, works as a mason, in a love marriage on June 4. On Monday morning, Srikant called her father and informed him that Kiranprabha was unwell and asked him to come immediately. When Kiranprabha’s parents arrived at her in-laws’ house, they found her hanging from a ceiling fan.
Meanwhile, Kiranprabha’s father alleged that since the wedding, his daughter had been facing both physical and mental torture for dowry.
Based on the situation at the scene and earlier complaints, her family suspects she was murdered for dowry and filed a complaint with the police.
Upon getting the information, police arrived at the scene and seized the body. Subsequently, it was sent for post-mortem. The cops also detained her husband for questioning in this connection.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
