Balasore, Aug 12: In a shocking incident reported from Basta block of Odisha's Balasore district today, a 13-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide reportedly due to persistent objections from his family to his online mobile phone gaming addiction.
The deceased boy has been identified as Jaikrishna Jena, son of one Santosh Jena of Jamsuli village within Singla police limits in Basta.
Jaikrishna was found hanging from a towel in the bathroom early in the morning, around 6 am. His family rushed him to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
According to reports, Jaikrishna was addicted to mobile phone gaming and ignored his parents' warnings about his screen time, even though his grades were dropping. His family tried to talk to him about his poor scores, but nothing seemed to help. On Tuesday morning, instead of going to his tuition classes, he was playing games on his phone. When his mother scolded him and took the phone away, he became very angry.
Thereafter, he headed straight towards the bathroom and locked himself up before allegedly ending his life by hanging. When he didn't come out for a long time, his parents became concerned and broke open the door only to find him hanging from a towel.
Family sources said that despite several attempts at counselling, nothing worked for Jaikrishna, and his phone addiction became a major concern for his parents.
Upon getting the information, police arrived at the scene and launched a probe into the matter. The cops also seized the body and sent it for post-mortem.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of death, said the police.
