Odia MBBS student gang-raped in Durgapur, 4 arrested, remanded to 10 days' custody

Bhubaneswar, October 12: Four youths were remanded to 10 days of police custody by the Durgapur SDJM Court on Sunday in connection with the gang rape of an Odia medical student in West Bengal's Paschim Bardhaman district.

The accused, identified as Apu Bauri, Firdos Seikh, Seikh Reajuddin, and Rezaul Seikh, were arrested after the victim's mobile phone and Rs 5,000 were snatched during the assault. Investigators have gathered evidence linking the men to the crime.

The incident occurred on Friday night when the second-year medical student from Odisha, accompanied by a male friend, was accosted by a group of youths on motorcycles. After passing lewd remarks, they chased away her friend and dragged her into a forested area behind the Durgapur campus, where she was gang-raped.

The victim was found by her friend and other students and rushed to the hospital. A police complaint was filed against five individuals.

Meanwhile, the victim's father has appealed to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to allow him to take her back to Odisha, citing safety concerns. Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi has assured the family of full support. In response, Mamata Banerjee emphasized the state's zero-tolerance policy toward crimes against women, directing the police to take strict action against the accused.
