Rourkela, Sep 4: The National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela) has improved its standing in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, securing 13th position in the Engineering category, up from 19th in 2024.
The institute has also been ranked 7th in Architecture and Planning, 9th in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) category, 30th in the Research category and 34th in the Overall category.
On this achievement, the Director of NIT Rourkela, Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao, said, "We are immensely proud and deeply honoured that NIT Rourkela has climbed to the 13th position in the NIRF 2025 Engineering Rankings, up from 19th last year; an extraordinary leap achieved through the collective dedication of our faculty, researchers, staff, and students. We are equally delighted with our continued excellence in the Architecture and Planning category, where we have been ranked 7th nationally and 9th in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) category.
Building on these achievements, NIT Rourkela envisions strengthening its position as a national leader in engineering education, research, innovation, societal impact, and overall growth. NIT Rourkela has achieved several notable distinctions in the NIRF 2025 rankings. It has secured the top-ranked engineering institute in Odisha and the 2nd position among all NITs in the ‘Engineering’ category. In the ‘Architecture and Planning’ category, the institute holds the distinction of being ranked 1st in the State.
In the ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ category, NIT Rourkela is the only NIT and the only institution from the state to be placed in the national top 10. The institute is also the top-ranked institution in Odisha and top among NITs in the ‘Research’ category, reflecting its diverse strengths and significant position in the national and state landscape.
The NIRF rankings, released by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, evaluate higher education institutions across multiple parameters, including Teaching, Learning & Resources, Research and Professional Practice, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach & Inclusivity, and Perception.
NIT Rourkela will build on this year’s results to further enhance its contributions to technical education, research, and sustainable development, while striving for excellence across all evaluated categories.
