New low-pressure system forms over Bay of Bengal; Heavy rains likely in Southern Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Oct 1: A fresh low-pressure area has formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions, just days after the previous system weakened. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is expected to intensify into a depression by October 2 and move in a west-northwest direction, potentially making landfall between southern Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh on October 3.

As a result, southern Odisha is likely to experience significant weather activity during this period. The IMD has predicted widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and wind speeds ranging between 40 to 50 km/h.

In anticipation of the impact, a yellow alert has been issued for 25 districts across the state, warning of moderate to heavy rain with possible thunderstorms and lightning. The alert is especially significant as it coincides with the Dussehra festivities, which may be affected by inclement weather.

For October 3, the IMD has upgraded the warning to orange for five southern Odisha districts — Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, and Gajapati — forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in these areas.

Citizens are advised to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather, and follow updates from local authorities and the weather department.
