New Delhi, Oct 25: A new mutation of the Delta variant of COVID-19, AY.4.2, dubbed 'Delta Plus' and now named VUI-21OCT-01 by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), has raised concern. AY.4.2 variant that spreads more quickly than the dominant Delta variant has also been found in India in very low numbers. The new variant has been declared as a "Variant Under Investigation (VUI)" (VUI-21OCT-01) in the UK. According to the UK health security agency, about 6 per cent of Covid-19 cases that were genetically sequenced last week were of the AY.4.2 mutation and more evidence is needed to know whether this is due to changes in the virus’ behaviour or to epidemiological conditions.
