Chennai, Feb 9: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Tuesday busted a major drug syndicate in Chennai and arrested six persons including three Sri Lankan nationals in this connection, said an official.
Acting on a tip-off, the NCB officials intercepted a goods carrier on Chennai-Gummidipoondi National Highway during the early hours of Tuesday. On conducting a search, the officials recovered 11 packets of amphetamine (a kind of drug) and seized them.
The packets weighing around 1 kilogram each were well concealed in a tarpaulin within a big machine in the truck and were difficult to detect, said an NCB official.
Later on interrogation, the driver of the goods carrier revealed the whereabouts of the other five members of the gang following which the NCB nabbed all of them including the three Sri Lankan nationals.
The NCB officers said that the arrested were planning to smuggle the drug to other Indian states as well as to Sri Lanka.
Further investigation in this regard is underway to ascertain other details, said an NCB official.
