Odisha chief minister and Biju Janata Dal chief Naveen Patnaik’s decision not to hold any rallies or campaign meetings for the Pipli bye-poll has a clear signal for all the political parties in India to immediately put a halt on all such activities, which has been going on with ruthless ease despite Corona menace.
Ruthless because, in spite of the apprehension about second strains coming, more or less five months back, all the political parties have in complete disregard to the imminent dangers from the pandemic, have been going all out to grind their political ax.
Neither the Election Commission nor any from the medical fraternity nor even top brasses in politics did have the fundamental realization that rallies or meetings or roadshows would only doubly aggravate the situation.
“We contest elections to serve the people. If the campaign has the potential to endanger lives, I would earnestly appeal to political parties and the Election Commission to reconsider both the duration and method of campaigning ” Naveen Patnaik tweeted.
It May be a little late but the message from the Odisha chief minister should be taken with due significance and seriousness by the EC and the political parties for the next course of the elections.
Patnaik’s Statesman-like Gestures
At a time when the pandemic has already stuck to our necks like an Albatross, this realization from Patnaik should have gone viral months back and served as an indicator for immediate restraints. Yet there is time for caution for the remaining phases of polling and hold our horses and go to virtual modes.
Still coming at a time, as it did, the lines of concern from the CM connote a Statesman-like gesture. Now it is for the EC to draw the present process to a halt.
Enough of Political Sermons
While looking at what is happening in our neighboring state, WB, and others, the greed for the campaigns went overboard to trigger a dangerous situation now spiraling out of control.
When the entire machinery of the country is panting for oxygen, vaccination and medical preparedness to combat the lethal wave of Corona, people cannot be reduced to mere guineapigs and made victims.
Even top most leaders must line up with Patnaik to show the sagacity at the recreation of a more sanitized atmosphere. “Every life is precious “this one line from Patnaik should help paving the way for all for responsible electioneering.
