National Handloom Day 2025: Sambalpuri weavers gain global recognition

Bargarh, Aug 8: The 11th National Handloom Day was celebrated at Janta Maidan in Bhubaneswar, a day of pride for the Meher families who have embraced their traditional occupation of weaving by hand. Sambalpuri handwoven fabrics, once confined to villages, are now admired by customers across India and abroad.

In weaving units, artisans skillfully spin threads, tie intricate patterns, and blend vibrant colours to produce a variety of fabrics. For many families, weaving is a collective effort, with all members’ working day and night to create these unique textiles, which are then sold in markets, providing them with a sustainable livelihood.

“Earlier, Sambalpuri fabrics had limited demand, but now they have become a preferred choice for both men and women, in India and abroad. Though the price may be slightly higher, wearing them gives a sense of pride and satisfaction,” said Priyadarshini Pattnaik, a resident of Bargarh.

Both central and state governments have taken several initiatives to support weavers by providing yarn and dyes at subsidised rates, offering training, and improving market access and infrastructure. Bargarh’s Behera Sambalpuri Cloth Market is well-known, and the state government has sanctioned ₹27 crore for its development. A proposal has also been submitted for setting up a textile park in the district.

To further promote the craft, the district administration has instructed schools, colleges, and government offices to wear Sambalpuri attire once a week, a move that has strengthened the economic condition of many weaving families.

“The government’s measures have benefited several weavers, but some are still left out of these schemes. Despite challenges in government support and marketing, traditional weaving continues to provide a means of survival for many families,” said Sharata Lal Singh, Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Bargarh.
