Muslim League Hits 15 Year High in Kerala Assembly Poll Trends

IUML emerges as kingmaker while UDF nears power

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has emerged as the standout performer in the 2026 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections, leading in 23 of the 27 seats it contested. This surge represents the party's most successful outing in fifteen years, significantly bolstering the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) as it crosses the majority threshold. Current data suggests the UDF is ahead in nearly 100 seats, effectively ending the decade-long governance of the Left Democratic Front.

Strategic Gains in Malappuram And Beyond

Data from the Election Commission confirms that the League maintained its iron grip on its traditional strongholds while expanding its influence. Key candidates like Prof. Abid Hussain Thangal in Kottakkal and T.P. Ashrafali in Kondotty have secured comfortable leads, showcasing the party's disciplined voter base. Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal, the IUML State President, attributed this success to the cohesive teamwork within the UDF alliance. Historically, the IUML has acted as the backbone of the UDF in the Malabar region, and its performance often dictates whether the alliance can successfully challenge the Left.

Impact on Cabinet Formation

Industries Minister P. Rajeeve currently trails IUML’s V.E. Abdul Gafoor in Kalamassery, signaling a major upset for the outgoing cabinet. This strong showing places the League in a powerful position for future negotiations regarding ministerial portfolios. While the Congress leads on 62 seats, the 22 to 23 seats likely to be held by the IUML make it an indispensable partner in the next government.
