Music director Abhijit Majumdar taken off ventilator, still battling for recovery

Bhubaneswar, Oct 25: Renowned Odisha music director Abhijit Majumdar, who had been on ventilator support at AIIMS Bhubaneswar since early September, was taken off the ventilator on Saturday following a slight improvement in his condition.

However, sources indicate that his overall recovery remains uncertain, as his brain activity has yet to return to normal.

Majumdar is under the continuous supervision of a medical team led by Dr. Srikant Behera, an ICU and ECMO specialist.

According to recent medical updates, while his vital organs are functioning normally, his neurological responses remain unresponsive, and he continues to be in a coma. The AIIMS doctors are closely monitoring his condition and considering additional treatment options to support his recovery.

The veteran composer, who has been battling multiple comorbidities such as hypertension, hypothyroidism, and chronic liver disease, was admitted to the AIIMS emergency unit on September 4 in an unconscious state and was immediately placed on ventilator support.

Subsequent medical evaluations revealed that Majumdar was suffering from Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome (both pontine and extrapontine), bilateral pneumonia, bloodstream infection (caused by MDRO–Acinetobacter), along with severe electrolyte and nutritional deficiencies.

Despite weeks of intensive treatment, his neurological condition has not shown significant improvement, according to the last medical bulletin issued on October 11.

While the recent decision to remove him from the ventilator suggests minor physiological stability, doctors emphasize that he remains under critical observation at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
