New Delhi, Jul 28: More than 100 people facing murder charges and hundreds of others accused in cases of robbery, sexual offences, Arms Act violations, and narcotics-related crimes were among those identified through facial recognition technology following the violence during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) march to Parliament, according to an internal Delhi Police report submitted to the government.

The report states that Delhi Police analysed CCTV footage of individuals allegedly involved in attacking police personnel during the protest using the Facial Recognition System (FRS). A total of 2,873 people were verified, of whom 2,402 were matched through the Crime Kundli database, while 471 were identified using the police dossier system.

According to officials familiar with the investigation, 989 of the identified individuals were found to have serious criminal antecedents involving heinous offences, raising concerns over the participation of repeat offenders in the violent demonstration.

The police assessment revealed that 101 individuals were facing murder charges, while 284 had been booked in cases related to dacoity and robbery. Another 92 people were accused in offences against women and children, including 61 facing rape charges, 25 booked for molestation, and six accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The report further stated that 229 individuals had cases registered against them under the Arms Act, 135 were accused in snatching cases, 67 faced charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 19 were linked to kidnapping cases, and 62 were facing charges of attempted murder.

Delhi Police are continuing their investigation into the violence and are examining the role of those identified through the facial recognition exercise as part of the ongoing legal proceedings related to the protest.
