Mumbai schools to remain shut for classes 1-9 till Jan 31 amid Covid rise

Mumbai, Jan 3: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has decided that the schools in the city will remain shut for classes 1-9 and class 11, keeping in mind the rapid rise in the Covid cases in Mumbai. "Schools for classes 1 to 9 will be closed till January 31, in view of rising Covid- 19 cases. School for Classes 10 and 12 to continue," the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation order said on Monday. The decision came from Mumbai’s civic body after the city reported 8,063 fresh infections on Sunday. The BMC has also informed that although the total number of active cases in the city stands at 29,819, 89 percent of the cases are asymptomatic. Notably, Maharashtra reported 11,877 new coronavirus cases on Sunday which was 29 percent higher than Saturday while the Sunday spike in Mumbai saw a rise of 27 percent than the previous day. Meanwhile, Maharashtra recorded 50 new Omicron cases on Sunday, taking to state’s omicron tally to 510. Out of this 328 cases have been recorded from the state’s capital, Mumbai.
