Mumbai, Dec 20: The death toll in the Mumbai boat tragedy wherein an Indian Navy craft collided with a passenger ferry near Gateway of India on Wednesday evening has risen to 14, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
"The death toll in the incident of the 'Neelkamal' passenger vessel capsizing after collision with a Navy boat near Gateway of India rises to 14, as another body is recovered by the rescue teams. The identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained," said the BMC.
As of now, a total of 105 individuals have been admitted to five different hospitals, stated the BMC. Of these, 90 are either discharged or in stable condition.
It is worth mentioning that the tragic collision between an Indian Navy craft and the passenger ferry, Neel Kamal, occurred off the Mumbai coast on Wednesday evening around 4 PM. The ferry was en route from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist destination.
The incident took place when the Navy craft, which was undergoing engine trials, lost control and collided with the ferry near Karanja, as confirmed by the Navy in a statement.
A Naval personnel and two staff members from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) aboard the Navy vessel also lost their lives in the mishap.
Following the accident, search and rescue operations were immediately initiated, coordinated with the Coast Guard and Marine Police. The operation involved four naval helicopters, 11 naval craft, a Coast Guard vessel, and three Marine Police boats.
