Dhenkanal: The mortal remains of the international mountaineer Kalpana Dash today reached her birth place Dhenkanal at around 130 pm. Arrangements were made for the last respect to the departed soul at Dhenkanal mini stadium. Many sports persons, friends, relatives and officials paid last tributes to the 50-year-old mountaineer.
Kater, her body was taken around the town in a grand procession. Many of her friends, sports persons and common people joined the rally.
Her body will be taken to her ancestral village Sariapada where the villagers will pay last respects. Later, the body will be taken to Puri for cremation at Swargadwar.
Kalpana’s body arrived at Bhubaneswar Biju Patnaik international airport at 12.30. Women and Child Welfare minister Tukuni Sahu and Sports Minister Tusharkanti Behera and Sports secretary paid floral tributes to the ‘Everest Woman’ of Odisha at Kalinga Stadium.
Kalpana, who created record by climbing Mt Everest in 2008 for the first time as a woman, had again scaled the top mountain peak. But this time, fortune didn’t favor her and she died while descending from the summit point on May 23.
