Most rivers of Odisha are polluted: Central Pollution Control Board

Bhubaneswar, Oct 7: The Gangua, Kathajodi, Daya and GuradihNallah, Brahmani in Rourkela, and Mangala in Puri district are the most polluted rivers in Odisha. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) said in its report about the pollution levels of Odisha rivers that were submitted before the National Green Tribunal during the hearing of a petition. The report has mentioned the pollution levels of Odisha rivers in which the Gangua river on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar city has been reported as the most polluted with 19.9 mg Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) in one liter of water. If the level of BOD exceeds 3 mg in one liter of water, then it's considered polluted. The BOD level in Mahanadi water is around 3 mg. When this is the pollution level before the festive season, the situation will be of more concern after November, said NGT advocate Sankar Prasad Pani. The high level of BOD in river water is dangerous for birds and animals also who drink its water, said Odisha Environmental Society secretary Dr. Jayakrushna Panigrahi.
