Modi and Putin resume car diplomacy before BRICS summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin showcased their growing personal camaraderie by travelling together in a limousine following their bilateral meeting in New Delhi. Occurring just one day before the upcoming BRICS summit, this event marked the fourth time the two heads of state have engaged in Modi-Putin car diplomacy. Their initial joint ride took place at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation gathering in China last year, establishing a unique pattern of informal networking. On Friday, both leaders headed toward the expansive Bharat Mandapam complex to attend the INNOPROM international exhibition.

Conversations earlier in the day moved beyond geopolitics into deep cultural exchange. Modi presented the Russian leader with a translated edition of the Thirukkural, an ancient Tamil philosophical text authored by the revered poet Thiruvalluvar. By sharing a scripture that encompasses diverse aspects of human existence, the Indian Prime Minister expressed confidence that literary exchanges will foster stronger connections between their populations. The India-Russia strategic partnership remains a crucial element of New Delhi's foreign policy, and this enduring alliance was evident as broadcasters captured the leaders sharing lighthearted moments at the conference venue.
Focus on trade and global stability
Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that the bilateral dialogue covered critical sectors such as defence, energy, space, and international commerce. Both nations used the B2B INNOPROM platform to encourage manufacturers and buyers to explore cutting-edge technologies and expand global business networks. Transitioning to international security, Modi and Putin reviewed ongoing conflicts in the Black Sea and West Asia regions. The Indian leader reiterated that negotiation and peaceful dialogue remain the only viable paths to resolving global disputes. Although Putin’s previous official trip to India happened in December 2025, both statesmen recently crossed paths at another summit in Kyrgyzstan earlier this month, reinforcing their continuous high-level engagement.
