Bhadrak, May 29: Fraudsters have created a fake Facebook account of Bhadrak Collector Gyana Das and sought money from the bureaucrat’s friends.
If you are a Facebook user and get a friend request from the person having a profile photo of the top officer, you would be the next victim of this new modus operandi of cybercriminals who are siphoning off the money by creating fake accounts of top government officials and police officers.
According to reports, some Facebook users realised that somebody had created the Collector’s fake FB account using his name and photo and sending them messages to give them money. The fraudster downloaded Das’s profile photo from social media sites and created a fake profile in his name.
The fraudster sent requests to many people who are presently on his friends’ list. As soon as they accepted the request, the fraudster messaged them saying he needed money urgently. Within three hours, the fraudster befriended many people and requested money from them through FB messenger.
Later, some Facebook users alerted the Collector about the incident, following which Das urged the social media users to ignore such messages and report the fake id. There has been an alarming increase in incidents of creation of identical Facebook accounts by cyber crooks to seek monetary help from social media users.
